| Three-Day October Camp- LAKOA
: Angelus Oaks, San Bernardino Mountains, 2002-11-01 |
| |
| It was Joy:
It is now two weeks since the Angelus Oaks gathering in the San Bernardino Mountains. We had tremendous participation from all over Southern California, a very pleasant three-day weekend made memorable by the
togetherness of the participants, children, young folks and elders. The
atmosphere and the ambience was something to experience and partake, particularly because of the presence of our elders (Sanjay Dhars and Vijay Dhars parents, and Nimee Bhat’s and my own mother). By Friday evening, more than 90% of the participants had checked in. By 10:00 PM, we all assembled
in the common room and right away, we became part of a close-knit family of
friends happy to be together again.
We spent the Friday night “composing” and singing Kashmiri songs with Amit Kaks guitar and Sanjay Khazanchi’s new Tumbaknari. Our elders helped us, the Dhar moms (Sanjay and Vijay’s moms)
guided us put Kashmiri lyrics to music – most notably, Awaz Waichi-no; we just could not stop until 3:00AM, and for some of us until the early light of the morning, but by then we had a group already up in the mountains looking for hiking avenues. Exploring the beauty of the mountains in the dry crisp sunny weather occupied most of our Saturday. Some of us drove to nearby Jenk’s lake and the Big Bear lake (all lakes waiting for rains to fill their cups). Some of us left our cars behind and joined the foot soldiers for a personal soaking in the filtered sunshine of the dense forests around Jenk’s lake.
Saturday evening came with a spicy barbeque as the on-foot explorers returned. Enjoying the barbeque on the centrally laid woodwork, we formally introduced new additions to the Southern California
family and very warmly welcomed Seema and her fianc? Michael to our midst, with a cake and a candle! We wish them a very happy future together.
It was getting nippy and we all moved in doors to the common room with the fireplace ablaze, tea, and song and dance.
Priya, Kanika and Ankita
organized charades. The two groups fought for every point with ultimate refereeing by Prashant and the vigilant Danielle (Vishal) Kotru. This was a special treat for the kids, our present to the future. Some more card games
and some more music, it was as if we were all transported to a Kashmiri marriage celebration. Two nights among the pine trees, a fireplace and friends was worth preserving forever in our hearts. Thank you to all the participants who made it possible.
